The Gas Board opened a showroom for gas appliances at 110 High Street.
In the early days many customers had a gas meter into which they had to put coins. This meant they were paying in advance. They couldn't run up a debt, and often when the gas man came to empty the meter, there would be a surplus of money and this would be repaid to the customer.
Later the showroom was the preferred place to pay a gas bill, with cash, rather than by a direct debit.
The showroom was closed down at the end of May 1993.
