In 1901 John & Mary Desborough lived at 19 Higham Road, with their 5 sons and 5 daughters. Their son Fred was baking, his sisters Annie and Emily were dressmaking, and their brothers Herbert, and John who was lame, were shoemaking alongside their father, and another sister, Mary was closing boots. They were all working ‘on their own account’ at the family home. Son Benjamin, was working as a grocer, daughter Elizabeth was probably helping her mother to run the home. The two youngest, James and Charlotte were working for their father.
