Northampton Building Society

The first branch was at 5a Newton Road in 1923. [see Trade Directories].

In 1929 it moved into 83 High Street, and in the 1970s it took over the Co-op Permanent Building Society, and then became Anglia Building Society.

After other take-overs it was renamed again as the Nationwide.

A 1950s money box. It was opened
at the bank and the money counted whilst the customer waited!

To encourage saving these money boxes were given to customers. The slots for the coins had graduations so the saver could see how much he/she had put into the box. There were two sections for 'Six Pence', one for 'Threepence', and at each end 'Penny or Half-crown', 'Shilling or Threepence', and 'Insert Notes Through Base'.
