Charles Bennett came to Rushden in the 1890s. He was born at Little Staughton, BDF, about 1874, son of John an agricultural labourer. The family had moved to Thorney CAM, in 1881 and to Turvey BDF the following year. By 1891 the family had moved again, to Rushden, with their ten children, the youngest being 1 month old. They were living next door to Seckington’s florist shop, and John and the older boys were all working as curriers.

In 1896 Charles married Louisa Gale (born at Little Barford c1878). In 1901 they were living at 10 Station Road with their three young children. Charles was working as an engine driver in the shoe trade.

By 1910 they had moved to 45 Moor Road where Charles was now a cycle dealer. The 1916 receipt above, signed by Charles, styles him as a 'cycle manufacturer'.
