A Sad Example

There was a man in Rushden town
Who fancied he was wise:
He thought his trade would run itself,
So didn't advertise.

He moped about his empty shop
In sad and silent mood,
No customers would come to break
The awful solitude.

At last his creditors pounced down
And took his goods away:
A tack and shovel now he works
For half-a-crown a day.

27
The Rushden Echo, 27th May 1898

THE MAN WHO DIDN'T
There was a man in Rushden town
Who would not spend a penny
To advertise his business; now,
Alas, he has not any.

THE MAN WHO DID
Another man in Rushden town
Did freely advertise,
His trade went up by leaps and bounds,
And still it's sure to rise.
