Northampton Mercury, January 4th 1862, transcribed by Susan Manton
The twenty first anniversary of the Rushden Teetotal Society was celebrated on the 26th of December by a public tea in the schoolrooms belonging to the Old Baptist Meeting. In the evening, a public meeting was held in the same place, when temperance poetry, recitations and dialogues were delivered by female members of the society, also addresses were delivered by male members. An original poetical piece, delivered by a female member, was well received. A piece written for the occasion by another member wound up one of the best meetings the society has had for a long time and encouraged them to review and double their efforts in the present year.
