The First Literary Meeting of the present session of the Rushden Wesley Guild was held last night in the Park-road Wesleyan School-room, Mrs. H. J. Atkinson presiding over a large attendance. A lecture was given on “Whittier: Poet, Politician and Saint”, and several of Whittier’s hymns were sung. A good discussion followed the lecture.

Presentation—Last night the members of the Park-road Wesleyan Adult Bible Class met to make presentations to two of their number on approaching marriage. Miss Deighton was presented with a copper kettle and Miss Spencer with a china tea service. The presentations were made on behalf of the class by the president (Mr. Staniland), and Miss Cunnington, Mr. Clouting, and Mr. Bandey also gave addresses. Songs were given by Miss Waring and Mr. F. Smith, and Miss Percival gave a pianoforte solo.

Presentation—At the Park-road Wesleyan Sunday school on Sunday last Mr. A. Gadsby, senior superintendent, on behalf of the officers and teachers, presented Mr. John Clifford O’Shea, a member of the young men’s Bible class and staff sergeant of the Boys’ Brigade, with a Bible on his leaving to join His Majesty’s Forces.

The Appointments - Miss Rose Peck
Perhaps the most interesting appointment of the evening was that of Miss Rose Peck as accompanist. The young lady is not yet 18 years of age, and to be elected to accompany the town’s choral Society is very great honour for one so young. Miss Peck has been organist at the Rushden Park Road Wesleyan Church for several years, and although she has not been brought into the limelight to any great extent before, she has been known, as a very promising player.
Mr. J. E. Smith’s appointment was not unexpected, for he is a thorough musician and a most able conductor, having devoted many years to the study of music. As organist and choirmaster at the Rushden Parish church, he has been responsible for the efficient presentation of much good music, and only recently enhanced his reputation by his perfect handling of the united choirs. Mr. Tomkins (deputy conductor) is a popular tenor soloist and has also some experience in conducting. Mrs. Denton (assistant accompanist) is a tasteful player of much experience.

The Executors of the late Mrs T Cunnington have offered to the trustees of the Park-road Wesleyan Methodist Church a valuable invalid’s chair, and the offer has been gratefully accepted. The chair will be available for use on application to Mr A Gadsby, 49 Park-road.

Concert for Patients
PATIENTS and staff at Rushden House Sanatorium were entertained on Monday evening by Rushden Methodist Male Voice Choir, under the baton of Mr. John Cooke.
The choir sang nearly a dozen numbers, and the other artistes were Miss Frances Bayes (soprano) and Mr. Willis Rands, of Raunds (elocutionist). The audience showed much enthusiasm and its gratitude was expressed by Dr. G. B. Lord.
A gift of fruit from the choir was handed over by the Rev. E. Houghton, minister of Park Road Methodist Church. Mr. Fred Noble made the arrangements.

Fellowship see Film on Gas
Members of Rushden’s Park Road Men’s Fellowship saw a film about drilling for natural gas in the North Sea at their meeting last week.
The film was shown by representatives of the East Midlands Gas Board and it was followed by questions and a discussion, mainly about the recent conversion of appliances for use with natural gas.

Home Missions
The annual Home Missions meeting was held at Park Road Methodist Church, Rushden, on Tuesday night when the speaker was Sister Joyce Rawkins, Methodist deaconess at Irthlingborough. She spoke of her seven years’ work at the Queen’s Hall Central Mission, Derby. She referred to the mission as a “family church” and used the letters of this word to illustrate different aspects of its meaning – Fellowship, Adoration, Money, Industry, Love and Youth. Miss R. L. Armsby presided over the meeting and the pianist was Miss P. M. Waite. A collection for the Methodist Home Missions department raised £2.12s. 7d.
