Higham Ferrers Circuit

In 1862 collections for the distress in the manufacturing districts caused by the Civil War in America realised £33 8s. 10½d.

The first name in the Circuit Account Book, Sept. 29th 182, is that of Richard Ekins, of Raunds, the Circuit Quarterly Meeting being held at his house.

Other names are as follow, the meetings taking place at their respective houses.

Danl. Pressland – June 5th 1829, at Higham Ferrers.

— Knighton – March 30th 1829, at Raunds.

Willm Blott – June 29th 1829, at Raunds.

(The Quarterly Accounts were signed by P. Wilkinson, Thomas Hewett and James Bird.)

Thos. Burgess, Dec. 28th 1829, at Higham.

Richd. Ekins – April 5th 1830, at Higham.

—Fisher – July 5th 1830, at Higham.

William Blott and Richard Ekins were the stewards, July 5th 1830. The book was signed by P. Wilkinson, Thomas Burgess and J. W. Cotton.

At the Michaelmas Quarterly Meeting 1830, at Raunds, the signatories were William Mowat, Edward Abraham, and Abel Walker.

Thomas Burgess and – Dearlove were the stewards at the Quarterly Meeting July 8th 8133.

The Michaelmas Quarter’s accounts 1835, were signed by Samuel Trueman and Thomas Marlow.

The stewards, Sept. 25th 1837, and March 26th 1838, were Thomas Marlow and William Blott respectively.

At the Quarterly Meeting Dec 32st 1841, there is this entry in the Stewards’ Book:

“This is to certify that at this Quarterly Meeting Messrs. Thos. Marlow and Richard Ekins were properly chosen Circuit Stewards. – M Dunn.”

It will be noted that the Quarterly Meetings were held at Higham Ferrers and Raunds alternately.

In the year 1885 Conference made Raunds the head of a new Circuit and detached with it the following ten places from the Higham Ferrers Circuit, namely: Thrapston, Ringstead, Woodford, Hargrave, Dean, Tilbrook, Old Westoin, Catworth, Kimbolton, and Leighton.

In the Returns Accommodation provided in Wesleyan Methodist Chapels obtained by the Wesleyan Chapel Committee in pursuance of a minute of the Conference of 1901 the Higham Ferrers Circuit is reported with the following sitting accommodation namely, Higham Ferrers 430, Irthlingborough 555, Stanwick 130, Riseley 176, Swineshead 140, Yelden 100, Addington 135, Souldrop 80, Knotting Green 75, Rushden 650, total 2,471; Newton (not Connexionally settled) 30.
