Succoth - Breakaway 1901

Rushden Echo, 4th January 1901, transcribed by Kay Collins

Succoth Baptist Chapel—In the absence of any prospect of peace prevailing under present conditions at this chapel, the pastor and a large section of the members have decided to form another church. The announcement of this decision was made at Sunday morning’s service, when the Rev. J. Crook gave three months’ notice of resignation, and announced that on the previous Friday night the three deacons of the majority of the members had decided to form another church, which would be erected in the Station-road, plans for which are mow in hand. This step, he said, had been forced upon them owing to the hostility of a small section of the church, there being no prospect of an amicable settlement. They desired peace, and something had to be done to put an end to disorderly conduct in the churches. Since Sunday last, we are informed, matters have developed rapidly, and arrangements were made early in the week for Mr. Crook to vacate the pastorate at once. This he has now done and his connection with Succoth Chapel has ceased.
