Fund Raising Events

Rushden Echo, Friday September 30th, 1898 transcribed Sue Manton

Church Sale of Work at Rushden
Yesterday (Thursday) a sale of work was held in the Nation Schools, the object being to raise funds for the St. Peter’s church building fund. A committee of energetic ladies and gentlemen took work in hand and special credit is due to them for the success they achieved. The lady workers were – Mesdames Morse, Burns, Bailey, Wing, Coulson, Ginns, W. Woodward, Blunt, Knowlton and Misses Mason, Stevens, Rich, Carter, Coulson. The room was prettily festooned with gaily coloured flags and the walls were draped with curtains, and together with floral decorations a charming effect was produced. Outside, flags fluttered in the breeze, and towards evening fairy lights danced in their sockets to the ever changing gusts of wind. The following gentlemen were responsible for the garniture of the building – the Rev. H. K. Fry and Messrs. R. Marriott, Westcombe, Preston, Dawkins, A. Miller, Tassel. A public tea was provided at 5pm about 16 sitting down to a nicely served repast. The following were donors of the tea – Mesdames Morse, Blunt, Burns, Sartoris, Reid, Sayer, Marriott, Wood, Foreman, Ablett, Mackness, Baxter, Westcombe, Lilley, Clayton, Bailey, Mason, Anthony, Knowlton, Nicholls, Sparrow, Turner, Andrews, Bugby, Seckington, Stevens, Bulling, Handcock, Mann, Walden Martin, P. Cave, W. Skinner, Knight, W. Smith, Ashdowne, Pitt, R. Marriott, Owen, Miller, Wing, Madin, Rich, C. Robinson, and Barnes and Miss Goddard. After tea the Rector (Rev. W. R. Morse), congratulated the workers upon the success, which had attended their efforts in the past. They had freed the school from debt during the last three years, a fact he was very thankful for. Now they must turn their efforts to St. Peter’s. If they raised £30 at the present effort, they would then have a debt remaining of £480. He was sorry they were about to lose the valued services of the Rev. J. R. and Mrs. Blunt, as their labours had been so highly beneficial in the parish. The sale then proceeded briskly, the useful and fancy articles meeting with ready purchasers.

A capital programme of music was arranged. Mr. W. S. Brown’s string band played the lively selections at intervals, and songs were given by Messrs. Brazier, Grohman, A. Packwood, J. C. Stevens and others. Mr. Brown rendered a violin solo in capital style. The accompaniments were played by Mr. J. E. Smith. Just before 9 o’clock, the goods which had not been disposed of were sold by auction by Mr. C. W. Wing. Dancing commenced about 9pm. Mr. F. Tassel supplying the music. The refreshments were ably catered for by Miss Ginns and Mrs. Pashler. There was a good attendance, especially in the evening.
