Pleasant Garden Party

A garden party arranged by the members of the Park-road Baptist Church Rushden, was held on Saturday in the grounds of Moorland House, Hayway, by kind permission of Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Sanders. The primary object of the effort was to raise £40 to pay for the renovation of the “Old Top Meeting” and Manse, which work has already been begun but is not yet completed. Tea was served in the charming grounds, and so great was the number of those anxious to participate in the tempting viands that accommodation could not be provided for all at the first sitting, and a second was found to be necessary.

The ladies presiding at the tables comprised Mesdames Horn, T. W. C. Linnitt, G. Selwood, J. Cave, F. Sharwood, F. Corby, W. C. Knight, P. Collins, and W. B. Sanders, and the Misses E. Newell, M. Goodwin, Wills, Smith, and L. Norman.

Various attractions were devised for the purpose of raising money. Mr. E. L. Brightwell, was in charge of the art gallery, Mr. Edgar Harris supervised a bowls competition, clock golf was in charge of Messrs. Hanger and Maddock; drawing, Mr. Margetts; football, Mr. R. Green; cricket, Mr. H. Wright; skipping, Mr. J. Sykes; basket, Mr. F. Sharwood; and wheelbarrow, Mr. Allen.

A charge was made for the use of the tennis lawn and this helped to swell the coffers, but the principal source of revenue was “The Shepherd’s Tent” wherein sat the Rev. H. J. Horn, to receive contributions. By this means alone about £20 was raised. A refreshment stall where might be obtained cooling ices or delicious plates of strawberries and cream was in charge of Mesdames T. W. C. Linnitt, S. C. Brightwell, H. S. Gates, T. Gates and the Misses G. Colson and Lack.

The committee responsible for the arrangements comprised the following :- the Rev. H. J. Horn, Messrs. S. C. Brightwell, E. L. Brightwell, H. Wright, H. Lack, E. Lack, S. Margetts, Hanger, F. Corby, P. Howe, L. Allen, W. B. Sanders, J. Sykes, J. Maddock, and W. Scarsbrook (secretary).
