The Church Covenant renewed October the 13^th day 1749               

We the Members of the Church of the living God meeting at Rushden, Having obtained mercy and found grace in his sight, to be made pertakers of the Holy-ghost, in his gracious influences & divine opperations, in and upon our Souls, quickening of us who before were dead in sin, enlightening our dark understandings, applying and bringing home to our hearts and consiences the glad tidings of peace and salvation, working and making away for its reception in our hearts, working us up to a Compliance with the Gospel of Christ, making us willing in the day of his power to imbrace Salvation on his own terms, which is not by works of righteousness which we have done, but in a way of Sovereing grace, having also exper-ienced under the influence of the same Spirit of Christ our head and husband, what it is to be refreshed and comforted, by whom we have enjoyed times of refreshing from the presence of the Lord, being made per-takers of that joy the Stranger intermedleth not with.

Even joy unspeakable and full of glory; from an experiance of which things, We profess in the Awfull presence of God, Angels and Men, that Christ is our Lord and him only will we Serve.

And having given up our Selves to the Lord and to one another by the will of God; We here Covenant to walk together in all well-pleasing in his sight as he shall enable us, promising willing subjection to him our head and husband, who is the Blessed and only Potenate, King of kings and Lord of lords; In whose strength we promise to keep the unity of the Spirit in the Bond of peace, to have a watchfull eye over each other: In whose strength we promise to maintain the faith once delivered to the Saints: In whose strength we promise to be striving together for the peace of the Gospel, to be maintaining the Doctrines of pure Grace, the truth as it is in Jesus, or the faith once delivered to the Saints, according to the more sure word of prophecy unto which we do well to take heed as unto a light that shineth in a dark place: And as set forth by the Elders and Brethren of the Baptized Churches in their Confession of faith.

We also promise in this our Covenant to be observing all the Laws, Ordinances, Statutes, Forms and Fashions of his house, according to our light and judgement therein: Especially those too great Institutions, Baptism and the Lords Supper; as to the former we differ from the rest of our Brethren; 1^st as to the mode of it:

Firmly believeing that the native and proper Signification of the word is to dip, plunge or overwhelm the whole body in water: which signification is confirmed by the constant practise of the Apostles and primitive Christians, in the first ages of Christianity, and was continued in the Church for near three Hundred years after Christ.

2dly. We differ from them as to the Subjects of it:

Firmly believeing that such and only such who are capable of giving a reason of the hope that is in them, or who believe with the heart unto righteousness, and with the mouth to make Confession unto salvation, according to.  rom10.10

3dly. We differ from them likewise as to what we believe to be the end of that Ordinance:

Firmly believeing the end of the Ordinance is to represent unto us, the Death, Buriall and Resurrection of our Dear Lord; as also our death unto sin and resurrection unto newness of life: this is what we believe concerning this Ordinance and what we here promise to maintain in the face of all opposition, and to bare a faithfull testimony against the contrary practise, and all other traditions and superstitions of men, that any ways infringes upon the Authority of Christ our great king and Law-giver.

We here also promise and solemnly engage as the Lord shall help us, to be followers of God as dear children, to be walking uprightly in his house, in our families, and in the world: to perform all relative duties in this house of God, or in any other relation we stand in whatsoever: to be baring one anothers burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ; to be tender-hearted and affecttionate one towards another; endeavouring to maintain the Unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace: We also promise and engage to watch over each others souls in the Lord; to exhort to reprove, correct, and admonish one another as occasion does require; and to withdraw from every Brother that walketh disorderly, and to deal with such according to the rules of Christ.

Now as we have engaged in Covenant to walk together in the ways of the Lord, so in the grace of our Dear Lord we shall Endeavour to perform: which God of his infinite goodness grant. Amen

And Dominion for ever & ever
