School Rooms in 1984

What a rotten blow!

A COMBINATION of wet and dry rot has forced Rushden's Independent Wesleyan Church's main schoolroom to close.

Both forms of rot have been found in the main hall floor and church leaders have decided to close it for the time being on the advice of surveyors.

Minister the Rev Reg Taylor said the state of the schoolroom would be discussed at the next meeting of the church committee in December. He said: "The situation is that we are not using the room, and we will be seeking guidance and advice about the problem." The schoolroom is mainly used for church groups and these are now using a smaller room in the same building which is not affected by rot.

Any larger events — such as bazaars — would be held in the new St Mary's Church Hall nearby, and other church rooms.

TIME OUT!

A TIME capsule, with papers dating back to 1890, has been unearthed by demolition contractors working on Rushden's Queen Street schoolrooms.

The papers, found in good condition, were buried inside a hollowed-out memorial stone in the main front wall.

Demolition firm owner Ken Impey, pictured left, said "We have found a poster announcing the opening of the building on Monday, April 28,1890, and hymn books.

When demolition work is completed Rushden Independent Wesleyan Church officials plan to build a new church hall on the same site.
