Kay Collins 1996
Window Tax - 1750 Irchester

Window Tax was levied from 1696 until 1851 and replaced the unpopular Hearth Tax.
In 1792 the rate was changed to 2 shillings tax for houses between 7 & 9 windows and
4 shillings for houses with between 10 and 19 windows. This resulted in some windows
being replaced with bricks and this is still evident today on some of the old properties.
