William Thorpe – will 1504
of Higham Ferrers


In the name of god amen the 26th day of July in the year of our Lord god 1504 I William Thorpe of Hiegham Ferres hole of mind and perfect remembrance blessed be almighty god make and ordain my testament and last will in this manner as followeth. First I bequeath my soul to almighty god to our Lady Saint Mary and to all the holy company of heaven and my body to be buried in the chapel of Our Lady within the parish church of Hiegham before said. I bequeath for my mortuary my best good after the custom. To the sepulchre light I bequeath 6 shillings 8 pence. To the bells 6 shillings 8 pence. To the Guild of St Katayn 6 shillings 8 pence. I give to the college of Hiegham for forgotten tithes 20 shillings. I bequeath to the mother church of Lincoln 20 shillings.

I will that there be sung for my soul and all Christian souls in the day of my burial and all 7 days and in likewise at the 30th day & solemn dirge of the master of the college and all his company of the (choir) and the master to have for his labour at the time 16 pence and so forth every priest of the college 6 pence. And the subwarden 8 pence every clerk 4 pence and every chorister 2 pence.

I will that there be dealt in the first day of my burial 5 pounds in p___ and if any of the said 5 pounds be left I will that it be dealt after that to poor people to pray for my soul. I will that my priest Mr Thomas Pexsall at Cambridge shall celebrate for me and for the souls of my father and mother and for my wife and for the souls of her father and mother and for the souls of Mr John Langney and Masters ___ and all my friends. And he to have yearly by the space of 4 years coming 14 pounds to be divided into 4 equal parts that is to say 3 pounds 10 shilings a year. I will that there be dealt 2 years after my decease every year 5 fagotts that is to say on Christmas every year 2 and a half and at the beginning of Lent 2 and half to poor people of Hiegham. I will there be dealt to poor people in Hiegham 5 years after my decease in the Lent season every year 3 shillings 4 pence in bread and herring. In likewise at Thynden (Findeon) 5 years 3 shillings and 4 pence every year. Also likewise at Doddington 5 years every year 3 shillings 4 pence. I give to the building of the chapel of Our Lady in Wenlyngboroowe (Wellingborough) 20 shillings. I give to Finedon church 4 ells of cloth the (piece) 8 pence an ell. I give to the (friars) of Bedford for a trental of masses 10 shillings. I give to John Bells 2 daughters 6 shillings 8 pence. I give to (Marche’s) 2 young daughters 6 shillings 8 pence. I give to my brother’s child that is lame 16 shillings 8 pence. I give to each of my godchildren 8 pence if they come forth. I give to Alice my servant 40 shillings I give to John my servant 20 shillings. I give to my other 2 servants that is to say Agnes Adam and Agnes Bernard to each of them 3 shillings 4 pence. I give to Margaret Percyvall that was my servant 3 shillings 4 pence.

I make and ordain to be my executors Maryon my wife and Robert Pipwell my neighbour. And also Richard Sebarn to see this my testament and last will performed as above said and hereafter written. Item for very trust and love I will that my executors shall cause a (memorial) stone to be laid upon my grave to be made with picture … the discretion of my executors aforesaid. I will that my executors shall have (for) their labour each of them 20 shillings. I will that my house in Hiegham Ferres with the appurtenences be sold to this __tent that a parcel of land or meadow shall be bought to the value of 13 shillings 4 pence by the year. And that to remain to the College for evermore for and perpetual dirge and masse to be sung for the soul of me and my wife all our good friends’ souls and for all Christian souls. And the foresaid 13 shillings 4 pence to be divided every year under this manner and form as follows that is to say the Master of the College shall have for his labour 16 pence the subwarden 8 pence every priest 6 pence every yeoman clerk 4 pence every (chorister) 2 pence. To 13 bedemen 13 pence. For (wax) after the (rate). The bells and the bellman to be content. And then the residue of the said money whatsoever it be I will that it shall go to the hearth in the College Hall toward the mending of the fire in the winter. And therefore I will my name be set in the 3 tables of the 3 (alters) in the church because they should other will pray for my soul in there ____ when they say mass. I give to Richard Bewys 10 shillings. The residue of all my goods not yet by me given nor bequeathed I give and bequeath to Maryon my wife for to dispose for my soul and for her __ souls for our good friends’ souls and for all Christian souls. In witness of all these premises I have set my seal the day and year above written being present (Mr) Richard (Hammeler) warden of Hiegham Feires, Sir John Grene, William Gowyn, Richard Horneby with others.

Will proved 17th of October 1504 and probate granted to Robert Pypwell and Richard Sebarn.
