Maryon Thorpe – will 1506
of Higham Ferrers


20th of April 1506 I Maryon Thorpe being of whole mind and perfect memory make and ordain this my testament and last will. First I bequeath my soul to Almighty God etc. and my body to be buried in the chapel of Our Lady within the parish of Hiegham Ferrers. I bequeath in the name of my mortuary my best good after the custom and manner. I give to the high alter of Higham for tithes forgotten 3 shillings 4 pence. To the sepulchre light 6 shillings 8 pence. To the high altar and vestment and also for the deacon and subdeacon of ___ of the value of 53 shillings 4 pence. To the bells 6s 8d. To Saint Kattryn (guilde) 6s 8d. To the repair of the steeple 20 shillings.

I will that a priest shall celebrate for my soul my husband’s soul and all Christian souls by the space of 4 years in the church of Higham. I will that at the day of my burial there be done a solemn dirge of the master of the College and of all the company of the choir. And the master to have for his labour 2s the subwarden 16d every priest of the College 12d every yeoman clerk 8d and every chorister 4d. And in the day of my burial I will there be dealt to poor people by the discretion of my executors in money 4 pounds and if any thereof be left I will it be disposed within 7 days after. At the 7th day I will there be dealt in money 3 pounds. And also at the 30th day in money 3 pounds.

I bequeath to the priest of the College 20 pence and to every yeoman clerk 8 pence. I bequeath to the building of Our Lady Chapel in Wedlyngburgh (Wellingborough) 6s 8d. To Thynden (Finedon) church 6s 8d. I bequeath to Higham church my house over the way And that I will it be sold and the money for it to remain to the church. I bequeath to Richard Seybarne my house that I dwell in with the hanging and the bedstead and also my house in Saint Botolph End. I bequeath to the forsaid Richard Seyborne 20 marks to be ‘praysed’ out of the stuff of the shop. To the said Richard a dressed gown and all the wine pots. I bequeath to the said Richard Sebarne all the fire wood timber and sparwys And therefore I will that he shall (dealt) every year 5 fagotts amongst the poor people of Higham by the space of 5 years. And at 2 times in the year that is to say afore Christmas 2 and a half and in Lent season 2 and a half during the said term of 5  years.

I bequeath to Agnes Seberne his wife my brewing vessels my best sheet my best kyrtill and a pledge girdell harness. I bequeath to Agnes Sebarne all my brass pots and pans because she should other while remember me. I bequeath to Sir William Hochyne 6 silver spoons the best featherbed and bedstead and hangers and the great coverlet. Item 3 pairs of flaxen sheets and (one) pair of harden and 2 pillows. Item to the aforesaid Sir William the little round gridell. I bequeath to John Grene my prentys (apprentice?) with that that is d__ in all to the value of 26s 8d money worth of the shop. I bequeath to John Hochyne the younger 5 shillings or else a cow. I bequeath to each of his children to be delivered at their marriage of the stuff of my household to the value of 10 shillings. And if any of them die before they be married I will that part be divided amongst the others that live. If all depart before they be married then I will that 10 shillings be given to their father and mother And the residue to be disposed for my soul. I bequeath to each of Hochyng’s children a pair of sheets and to Hochyn’s wife my russet gown. I bequeath to the (lame) child of Dodyngton 40 shillings to be paid every year 4 shillings till the said sum of 40s be paid if the child have so long. I bequeath to William Columbyne 6s 8d.

To the church of Lincoln 20 pence. I give to the high altar of Higham my best diaper cloth. I give to John Plowright of Thynden 20d. To Agnes Harvy of Thynden 20d. To old John Hochyn 20d. To Agnes Herde my gown that I did wear on workdays. To Elizabeth Bull my black gown and 5 shillings in money. To Newbon’s wife a kyrtill. To John Lechy’s wife a kerchief and an apron (gathered). To Stevyn Miller’s wife a workday kyrtill. To my godchildren at __ Mulsoys the priest and the ___ 4 pounds to be divided between them. And 20d to be delivered amongst the other children. The which 5 pounds I will they have of the debt that  ___ oweth. To James Bull 12 pence and to each of my godchildren 4 pence. I make and ordain to be my executors Sir William Hochyn and Richard Seburne to fulfil this my testament and last will as above said and hereafter written. And I will that each of them shall have for their labour 40 shillings. I will that my goods both moveable and immovable shall rest in Higham till such time as they shall be disposed. I will also that (Lord) Thomas Broke prior of Tykfford be supervisor of my testament to see that my executors do their part. And he to have for his labour 20 shillings. The residue of all my goods not bequeathed I will that my executors dispose therein for my soul my husband’s soul and for all Christian souls. In witness I the aforesaid Maryon have set my seale being present Sir John Woodward subwarden and Sir John Plowright parson of Newnton with others.
