Thomas Smithe the elder – will


13th of March 1622, I Thomas Smithe the elder the unprofitable servant of God lame and weak in body but strong and perfect mind do make this my last will etc. Long religious dedication follows.

As concerning my wife with whom I coupled myself in the holy estate of wedlock and with her have had sons and daughters…I do give unto Jane my wife one hundred pounds within a year of my decease provided that what goods and chattels my said wife shall possess whatsoever at the time of her death shall freely be given to the children of Robert Smithe my son and no part of the same unto any of my other sons namely Thomas Smithe and John Smithe neither to them their wives and children. Also I give to Thomas Smithe my eldest son 2 shillings 6 pence and to my other son John 2s 6d. I give to the two daughters of my son Thomas which he now has living to each of them 20 shillings. Also I give to Thomas Smithe son of John Smith my son 40 shillings. To my son in law William Dennys I give 2s 6d and to his two sons William and Thomas Dennys five pounds each. I give to Thomas Smithe son unto Robert Smithe my son 10 pounds and unto Robert Smithe the younger and son of Robert Smithe 20 pounds.

Also I give to Robert Smithe my son one hundred pounds [clause given]. Also I give to Agnes Killingworth my goddaughter 20 shillings a ___ and a lambe or 6s 8d. I give to Robert Smithe the younger and son of Robert Smithe my son one cottage or tenement standing and being in Higham Ferrers the common land on the one side and one [blank] Gutter’s dwelling on the other side provided that the widow Todde which now dwelleth in part of the said cottage next unto the lane shall remain and dwell in the same during her natural life paying. Yearly for the same ten shillings and keeping the same in good repair. Also I give to Thomas Smithe and Robert Smithe sons unto Robert Smithe my said son one close by estimation four acres be it more or less being in Rushden Thomas Smithe on the one side of the close and Robert Saunders on the other side also one parcel of meadow lying and being within the meadow and precincts of Raunds by estimation eight roods be it more or less one Barsforde on the one side and one Enfield on the other side provided and my will is that Jane my wife and Robert Smithe my son shall have the said close and meadow in their own possessions during their natural lives or the longer liver of them.

All the rest of my goods and chattels I give to Jane my wife and Thomas Smithe son of Robert Smithe my said son whom I make executors of this will and I further ordain and make Robert Smithe my son to be my overseer and supervisor giving my said overseer 20 shillings.
