Richard Pounde – will
of Newton


22nd December 1558, I Richard Pounde being sick in body but of good memory make this my last will as follows. First I bequeath my soul to almighty God etc and my body to be buried in the church next to my wife. To the high alter 4d. To the mother church of Peterborough 2d. To my parish church 6s 8d. To the poor people of the township of Newton to every house 4d. To Henry Hawse a cow and 20d. To Agnes Hawse 6s 8d, one horse, one pair of sheets, a red petticoat, 3 pieces of pewter and a candlestick. I give to William Hawse the son of henry 6s 8d. I give to John Hawse 6s 8d. I give to Margaret Purney 6s 8d, a pan in the hall, a heffer, two pairs of sheets, four pieces of pewter and one candlestick. I give to Robert Purney 6s 8d. I give to Richarde Purney 6s 8d. I give to Pawle Purney 6s 8d. I give to Thomas Purvey 6s 8d. I give to Alice Purney 6s 8d. I give to Joane Purvey 6s 8d, one brass pot the best that is occupied daily, a bullock, 3 pieces of pewter, 2 pairs of sheets and a candlestick, a salt cellar, a mattress, and a red coffer. I give to Alice Hawse the best coffer, a woollen wheel and a linen wheel, 2 bussett stools, a featherbed, 2 mattresses, a cow a h___, a bullock, 6 pieces of pewter, 2 bedsteads, a chain of (boorlden), the best ‘chaffying’ dish, one laten and basin, one pewter basin, a (layer) of latten, the table in the parlour, a cupboard in the hall and the best carpet.

I give to James Hawse 53s 4d, a great spit and the iron in the house. I give to Richard Savage a bullock and 2 quarters of corn. I give to John Olde a bedstead, 2 pairs of sheets and the fra__ hovel. I give to Elyn Pounde 2 bedsteads…. A featherbed, 3 pairs of sheets, 3 pieces of pewter and a candlestick, a cow, a brass pan of bushel, 2 chains and a leather bottle. I give to William Pounde a yearling bullock, a ‘joyned’ bedstead and a hymnal, bed in the parlour at the parsonage of Newton, a feather bed a mattress that lies on the said bedstead, a bolster, a pillow, a pair of sheets, one pair, of blankets, a coverlet, the coffers and hanging about the bed … next to the said bed…

And if it pleases God that the said William do die then I will that Helyn Ponde his mother shall and all the part of the said William so dying except only the 6 silver spoons, the maser and 6 potyngers to go to Alice Purney the elder and to Alice Hawse or her child. I give to William Ponde 8 pounds in money and I will that Mr Parson of Yelden shall have the said money and legacy and the said William Ponde in his keeping to see him honestly brought up and his stock to be put to his use and profit. I give to Katheryne Pounde 4 pounds in money the greatest brass pot save one, a red heffer, 3 pairs of sheets, 3 pieces of pewter and her mother to have the use of the said Katheryne Ponde and to have part of her legacy as William Smyth parson of Yeldon shall see cause. I will to every one of my godchildren 12d each. And the residue of all my goods unbequeathed my debts paid and my will performed I give and bequeath to William Purney and John Olde my servant whom I make my executors saving that I will that William Purvey shall have the lease of the house at Wymyngton wholly to himself and John Olde to have half the tilth with him for this year half the close and half of all things there that are mine and the said William Purney to occupy half the tilth with him at Newton. I give to Sister Helen a black ‘kyrtell’ and 6s 8d. I give to Alice Purney ‘dy’ daughter the best coffer but one, the table in the hall, the forme and the carpet upon it, a featherbed, a bolster, a lined coverlet, a little chair, and a ‘boorden’ chair, 2 bussett stools, .. brazen morter and a woollen wheel I give to Yelden church 3s 4d. I give to Wemyngton church 3s 4d. I give to Knottynge church 3s 4d. I give to Henry Hawse my load of wood and I make William Smythe parson of Yelden and John Pybourne parson of Knottynge my supervisors and I give them each 6s 8d. These being witnesses William Smythe parson of Yelden, John Pybourne parson of Knottinge, William Parke and Henry Allyngham with others.
