John Harriott – will 1678

In the Name of God Amen I John Harriott of Woollaston in ye County of Northampton gent being weak in body but of sound and perfect mind & memory praised be to Almighty God for the same do make and ordaine this my last Will & Testament in manner following First I commit my soul into ye hands of the Almighty God my creator hoping by the meritts death & passion of my Lord & Saviour Jesus Christ to have free pardon and remission of all my sinnes And my body I commit to the earth from whence it came to be buried at the discretion of my Executor hereafter named And as for my worldly estate which ye Almighty God hath bestowed upon me I give and bestow ye same as followeth Imprimis I give & devise unto my trusty & welbeloved friend Richard Whitworth of Dodington in ye said County of Northampton Yeoman and his heirs all my messuages Lands Tenements hereditaments pasture groundes & premises whatsoever with their & every of their appurtenances scituate lying & being in Farnedish in ye Counties of Bedford & Northampton or one of them Upon this trust & confidence nevertheless in him the said Richard Whitworth and his heirs reposed That he the said Richard Whitworth and his heires shall make sale of all my Estate in Farnedish herein before to him devised with what convenient speed and for ye best price he or they can and with ye moneys which he or they shall so raise by ye sale of my Estate as aforesaid to pay all such Debts both in Law or conscience which I doe or shall owe to any person or persons whatsoever together which [with] such Legacies as I shall hereinafter dispose of Item I give unto my daughter Anne Harriott (to be paid unto her when she shall attaine ye age of one & Twenty yeares or day of marriage which shall first happen) one hundred pounds which one hundred pounds I devise my said friend Richard Whitworth to pay into ye hands of my sonne in Law William Sedgweeke within one moneth after ye sale of my Estate as aforesaid Item my will & mind is That my said Sonne in Law William Sedgweeke shall have ye tuition and bringing up of my said daughter Anne until shee come of age Item That he ye said William Sedgweeke shall receive all ye rents & profits of my Estate in Eaton Socon in the County of Bedford which same by her mother And shall be allowed fifteen pounds yearly out of the same over & above ye interest of ye one hundred pounds so to be paid into his hands for her use as aforesaid for her education & bringing up which I desire may be after ye best manner he may or can answerable to her degree of birth And that my said sonne William Sedgweeke shall at her age of one & Twenty yeares be accomptable to her for what moneys he shall receive for her use over & above ye said fifteene pounds Item I give & bequeath unto Elizabeth daughter of my Sonne in Law John Johnson of Grendon in ye said County of Northampton yeoman one hundred pounds to be paid to her at her age of one & Twenty yeares or day of marriage which shall first happen to be paid to her by ye said Richard Whitworth out of ye moneys which he shall receive out of ye sale of my said Estate And in case she shall happen to depart this life before she shall receive ye same then my will & mind is that ye sume shall be equally divided amongst ye rest of ye children of ye said John Johnson Item I give unto ye poor of Woollaston ye summe of three pounds to be paid unto them by ye said Richard Whitworth within one moneth next after ye sale of my Estate as aforesaid Item I give & bequeath unto my said Sonne in Law William Sedgweeke all my goods and Chattells whatsoever not herein before otherwise disposed of And doe make him sole Executor of this my last will & Testament Item my will & mind is That ye said Richard Whitworth and his heires shall pay unto my sonne in Law William Sedgweeke all such summe of money which shall be remaining in his hands by virtue of ye sale of my Estate as aforesaid after ye payment of my debts as aforesaid and ye Legacies herein by me charged upon him And doe desire ye said Richard Whitworth to be aiding & assisting my Executor herein And doe give & bequeath unto ye said Richard Whitworth & his heires Tenn pounds for his care & trouble therein to be deducted out of ye moneys which he or they shall receive by virtue of ye sale of my said estate over & above all reasonable charges which he shall or may expend in ye performing this my will And doe hereby revoke all former wills by me heretofore made In witness whereof I have hereunto sett my hand & Seale this seventeenth day of August in ye Thirtieth yeare of Our Soveraigne Lord King Charles ye second Anno Dom 1678 Signed John Harriott Signed Sealed published & declared to be his last will & Testament in ye presence of Thomas Mash the marke of Mary Allen Jo Gamble
