Robert Catlyn – will
elder, of Raunds


20th October 1549 I Robert Catlyn the elder of Rands make this my last will and testament as follows. Soul to almighty God etc. praying for his mercy for I have been a wretched sinner all the days of my life and I cry therefore to Him for mercy. I will that my body is buried in the churchyard of Rands before the chancel door.

I give to the poor men’s box 40 shillings. To the poor maids at the day of their marriages 6 pounds, 13 shillings and 4 pence to be distributed at the discretion of my executors. I give the mending and repair of Northende causeway (cawsey) and Northende Lane 6 pounds 13 shillings and 4 pence.

I give to Christopher Catlyn my son my lease of my woods at Greffam in the county of Huntingdon which sometime belonged to the late dissolved (monastery) of Sautrey in the said county. I give to Edmond Catlyn my youngest son one hundred marks sterling in ready money or money worth of lawful pennyworth. I give to Fraunces Catlyn my daughter one hundred marks on the day of her marriage or within one year next after the said day of marriage over and besides 10 pounds towards her apparel and if it fortune that Frances should die before she marries then I will that 20 pounds of the said hundred marks to be paid to Edwarde Catlyn my son and the other 20 pounds thereof to Alice Stukely, Anne Tawer and Amy Walker my daughters evenly And 6 pounds 13s 4d of the said 100 marks to Wiliam Catlyn son to my said son Christoper Catlyn And 20 residue of the said 100 marks to the daughters of Thomas Catlyn my eldest son evenly distributed. And the said 10 pounds towards her apparel I will and give to Anne Catlyn the daughter of the said Thomas Catlyn if Fraunces should die before she is married.

I give to my son Thomas Catlyn all the stuff and implements of household in my hall parlour and the best lodging chamber And also I give to the same Thomas my two brass pots. I will that all the rest of my brass and pewter be delivered to him and all my other children at the discretion of my said wife And the same to be delivered immediately after her decease. I give to Alice Stukely 10 pounds and to Anne Tawer 10 pounds and also to Amy Walker 10 pounds. And further I will that my said daughter Alice Stukely shall have meat and drink at the cost and charge of my executors for the space of two years after my decease if she happen to lye so long unmarried.

I will in like manner that my executors immediately after my decease shall provide and find Fraunces my daughter meat, drink and cloth until she be married. I give to Agnes my wife my (chef) house in Rands that I dwell in with the appurtenences part of which is in the occupation of John (Jore) and John Fordell for the term of her life And after her decease to remain to my eldest son Thomas Catlyn and to his heirs lawfully begotten. I give to the said Thomas all my other lands and tenements in Randes  and to his lawful heirs. And for default of such issue to remain to Christopher Catlyn and to the heirs of his body and for default of such issue to the right heirs of me the said Robert Catlyn.

I give to Agnes my wife all my lands and tenements in Hargrave in the counties of Northampton, Bedford and Huntingdon for the term of her life and after her decease to remain to Thomas Catlyn my eldest son and for default of male issue to Christopher Catlyn his brother and for default of male issue to remain to the right heirs of me Robert Catlyn. I give to Agnes my wife all my lands and tenements in Harrold, Carlton and Chelyngton in the county of Bedford for the term of her life and after her decease to Christopher Catlyn and for lack of issue then to Thomas Catlyn and for lack of issue then to the right heirs of me Robert Catlyn.

I will that Sir William Canon vicar of Rands shall make a sermon in the parish church the day of my burial for which I give him 6s 8d. I give to Robert Fordell my servant and godchild 40 shillings. To Henry Beale 20 shillings. To William Bronde 10 shillings. To John Shryff 10 shillings. To Margery Hodd 40 shillings and to Agnes Hall 10 shillings.

I give to every one of my godchildren a ewe sheep. I will that my nephew Robert Catlyn shall have oversight of this my last will and I give him 40 shillings. The residue of all my goods I will that Agnes my wife and Thomas my son whom I make my executors dispose of them for the wealth of my soul. Witnesses to this will Thomas [blank] the elder of Rands gent, Willyam Canon of Rands clerk, Thomas Phillippe the elder of Brigstock and others.

Probate granted 5th May 1550.
