9246 1st Scots Guards

Rushden Echo, 29th December 1899, transcribed by Kay Collins

A Raunds Man Wounded—The following letter has been received by Mr. and Mrs. Whitney, of Raunds:- “9246 Private C. W. Whitney, 1st Scots Guards, No. 1 General Hospital, Wynberg, South Africa, Dec. 4, 1899. Dear Father and Mother, Just a line to tell you that I have got wounded. I got shot through both legs at Modder River, but I am getting on all right. Of course, I have to keep to my bed, but I am well cared for. We are at Wynberg, only nine miles from Cape Town. I hope that you won’t be fretting about me, for I shall soon be all right again. Fond love to all at home.—Your loving son, Wilford Whitney.
