Unusual Wedding, Irchester 1878

On Monday morning, 4th February 1878, Joseph Osbourn married Priscilla Wykes at Irchester. They had cohabited for many years, and had five children. The Vicar, Monk, married them without charging any fee, and also sent them a joint of meat and other things for the wedding dinner. Mrs. Arkwright sent them a quantity of clothing. The bridegroom was seriously ill, and they were carried to the Church in Mr. Thompson's trap. The groom was in the last stages of consumption, and was advised to marry for the sake of his wife and children.
