Rushden Echo, 2nd January 1925, transcribed by Kay Collins
Mr Z Newell
Presentation at Higham
Recognition of Faithful Service – Retirement at Seventy-Two

A very pleasing function took place on the closing down of the factory of Messrs Charles Parker, Higham Ferrers, for the Christmas holiday. This was the presentation to Mr Z Newell, of North-End, Higham, of an adaptable easy chair, on the occasion of his retirement from the position he has held there for 37 years. The presentation was made by Mr G Mead on behalf of the workmates and the staff, in the presence of many of the men.

Mr Mead, in making the presentation, said they hoped sincerely that Mr Newell would long live to enjoy it. He paid a striking tribute to the work of Mr Newell, and spoke of his long and faithful connection with the firm.

Mr Newell, in accepting the gift, thanked the donors very much for their gift and for the kind words spoken about him. He appreciated it very much.

Before the presentation Mr Owen Parker, C.B.E., the principal of the firm, paid a tribute to Mr Newell, and wished him every success. He thanked Mr Newell very much for his services. Mr Newell returned the compliment to Mr Parker, and expressed his pleasure at being able to render any service he could.

In an interview with a representative of The Rushden Echo, Mr Newell told a brief but interesting account of his “industrial” life. Messrs parker’s factory is the only factory in which Mr Newell has worked, his previous experiences being obtained whilst outside the sphere of factory life. Mr Newell commenced work with a brother who had a small business, and with whom he worked for some years. Gaining experience in this way, Mr Newell started on his own, making hand-sewn boots. After following this occupation for some time, he commenced work at the factory of Messrs Parker, whom he served faithfully for 37½ years. For 25 years he has been on the staff, or, as he laughingly explained, “Drawing my money always, no matter what happens.” When Mr Newell started at the Higham factory he was living at Chelveston, and so every morning he walked the distance with unfailing regularity. However, he moved to Higham some 27 years ago, but he is still an energetic walker, having only just arrived back from a “tramp” when our representative called. Mr Newell is a native of Chelveston. He expressed his sorrow at leaving work, but, as he remarked, “When one gets to 72, one can’t keep going for ever.” No doubt the reason of Mr Newell’s success has been the attention and interest he has paid to his work, and we are sure our readers will join with us in wishing Mr Newell continuance of this prosperity.
