The Rushden Echo, 31st December 1909, transcribed by Kay Collins
Mr Percy Hustwaite

MR PERCY HUSTWAITE, son of the late Mr. George Hustwaite, who arrived home last Tuesday week from Singapore, has brought back with him a large number of interesting curios, among them being a tobacco pouch, made from the skin of a python. The events which led up to the killing of the reptile are interesting. The gymnastic instructor attached to the 2nd Royal West Kent Regiment, with which Mr. Hustwaite was stationed, had been out for a cycle ride and was returning home when he rode over what he conceived to be the branch of a tree. Upon dismounting he found that what he had actually ridden over was a python fifteen feet long. The instructor hastily summoned assistance and the reptile was speedily dispatched with sticks. The python is of a venomous species and if the snake had struck the cyclist he would probably have lost his life. Mr. Hustwaite has kindly consented to relate more of his experiences abroad which will be published in next week's issue of "The Rushden Echo."
