Rushden Echo and Argus, 9th May 1947, transcribed by Kay Collins
Miss Helen Haddon
Appointed Serving Sister
PAST and present members of Higham Ferrers St. John Nursing Division, with cadets and members of the Men's Division, were present at the Higham Ferrers School on Wednesday evening, when Miss Helen Haddon, Lady Divisional Superintendent, received presentations on becoming a Serving Sister.

Lady Corps Supt. Mrs. B Stephenson, of Wellingborough, presented Miss Haddon with the Ribbon of the Order of Serving Sisters of St. John.

Miss Helen Haddon
A Member of the St John Ambulance Brigade for 27 years, Miss Helen Haddon, Lady Divisional Superintendent, receives a ribbon as a Serving Sister of the Order of St. John.

The presentation is being made by Lady Corps Supt. Mrs B Stephenson, of Wellingborough.

She said Miss Haddon had trained many members in the town and in offering her congratulations, said she hoped to see many of those who had been trained aspire to the same award.

Miss Haddon said she realised the great honour that had been bestowed upon her, and knew it could not have been achieved without the support of members and officers in the past.

She had been a member of the Brigade for 27 years, and Lady Superintendent for 14 years. During that time she had seen the Division come through some very rocky times; once there were only six members.

There was, however, a strong cadet division now, which she believed would make the Division strong again.

Miss Haddon thanked Mrs Biggs and Miss Bird for making the evening's arrangements.

A bouquet on behalf of the cadets was presented to Miss Haddon by Cadet Corporal S. Crisp, and a set of candlesticks from "Nursing Sisters and Cadets past and present," by the President (Mr. J. W Barker). Mr. Barker said everyone had appreciated the services Miss Haddon had rendered the town - there was a vast difference between giving 27 years' voluntary service and 27 years paid service.

Mr. H. R. Patenall, president of the Men's Section, added his congratulations. One could not imagine the value of her work over so many years he added. There were so many who had passed through her classes who in turn had giver tremendous help to others.

Mrs. Stephenson also presented bars to the following Nursing Sisters: Mrs. M. Allen, Mrs. I. Anderson, Miss O. Richardson, Miss J. Bird, Miss R Pitts, Miss H Haddon, Miss M. Denton, Mrs. W Pack, Mrs. W. Biggs, and Miss M. Lloyd.

Miss W. M. Clipson and Mrs. M. Sumpter, both of Rushden and Serving Sisters, were also present, and Miss Clipson gave an address on the Order of St. John, referring to it as the "oldest order of chivalry in the world."
