Rushden Argus, 19th January1917, transcribed by Kay Collins
Groom – Lawrence

On Thursday of last week a very pretty wedding was solemnised in the Wesleyan Church, Raunds, when Pte. E. Cyril Groom, of the A.S.C., M.T., eldest son of the late Mr. Charles Groom, and Mrs. Groom, of Lawson-street, Raunds, and Grace, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Lawrence, of “The Poplars,” Raunds, were united. There was a large congregation of relatives and friends at the ceremony, which was conducted by the Rev. E. P. Blackburn, superintendent minister. The choir, of which the bride has been a very valuable member for many years, was in attendance, with Mr. J. W. Hall at the organ. During the services the hymns, “The Voice that breathed o’er Eden” and “O, Perfect Love,” were sung. The bride was given away by her brother, Mr. H. W. Lawrence, wore a dress of white crepe de chine and a chenille hat. The bridesmaids were Miss May Cobley (cousin of the bride) and Miss Beulah Groom (cousin of the bridegroom), and were attired in dresses of shell pink silk and black lace hats, and wore shell brooches. The bride carried a handsome bouquet of pink malmaisons, and each of the bridesmaids a sheaf of lilies, all the gifts of the bridegroom. The bridegroom was attended by his brother, Mr. Sydney Groom, as best man. The communion table had been prettily decorated with flowers. After the register had been signed, and as the happy couple left the church, the organist played the “Wedding March.” A reception was subsequently held at the residence of the bride’s parents, and later an enlarged company sat down to an excellent tea and supper in the Wesleyan Schools, where a most enjoyable evening was spent. Over the tea table the Rev. E. P. Blackburn and Messrs. W. Hall and W. F. Corby expressed hearty good wishes to the newly wedded pair, and referred to the valuable musical help that they had given in that church and the town generally. [a list of presents follows]
