Mr and Mrs Thomas Gates of Kingswood Place, Raunds, have heard from their eldest son, Sergt. Fred Gates, of the Northants Regt., that he has been awarded the Military Medal, but does not say what it was awarded him for. Sergt. Gates is also the holder of a medal from the South African War. He rejoined his regiment in the early part of 1915, and went out to France in July 1915 under the late Colonel Ripley. Sergt. Gates was wounded in the second great push of July this year, and has been in Thorpe Hospital Norwich ever since.
Mr and Mrs Gates have two other sons serving, both of whom have been wounded and are now in England. The youngest, Pte Walter Gates was with his brother Sergt. Gates both being wounded at the same time in the battle of Trones wood. He is now in hospital in A…ham, Cheshire. Pte Ernest Gates the second son, was wounded in a night attack near Lo..s on the 8th April last. He is now stationed in Ramsgate.
