AN Irchester man, Mr. Herbert R. Garley, is Chief Fire Officer of Madras, India, and controls 1,500 officers and men. Mr Garley, nephew of Mr. and Mrs. R Stokes of 20,Thrift-st., Irchester, went to India in 1942, after several years' service as a full-time fireman in the London Fire Brigade. He served throughout the London "blitz" and was promoted to Leading Fireman in 1940. He was promoted to Sub-Officer shortly before he left for India, where he rose to the rank of Divisional Officer at Madras, later becoming Chief Fire Officer.

Aged 35, Mr. Garley was employed prior to 1938 by a Hendon decorating firm. He was educated at Irchester Council School.
