Herbert Marriott Dickenson was born at Stanwick in 1878, second son of Eli and Ann. At first he trained as a clicker but at the age of 14 he was taken to Higham Ferrers by his father, on 24th April 1892, to be put to an apprenticeship with Frederick Brazier, a coachbuilder, for five years.

The scribe who drew up the document had mistakenly entered the surname as Dickerson.

In 1900 Herbert married Agnes Maud Lily Farringdon (born Thurning). By 1911 they had three boys, and he was still working as a coachbuilder at Higham Ferrers.
