A Whole Village in Mourning
“The Grand Old Lady”
Mrs. Wetenhall, the “Lady Bountiful” of Stanwick, died on Sunday morning. She had been seriously ill only a week, and would have been 90 next March.
Her passing has cast a gloom not only over Stanwick, which is in deep mourning, but over a wide district, for she had been for many years a familiar figure as she rode in her horse-drawn carriage, the last of the old aristocracy in the village.
She was beloved by everyone, and though she herself remained the staunchest of conservative Victorians she never depressed the present nor failed to express her appreciation of it. She retained her exceptionally keen intellect until the end.
A Notable Family
Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Wetenhall was the widow of Mr. Cecil A S Wetenhall, who died on Septemeber 3rd 1918. Mrs. Wetenhall was a daughter of Major Charles Hill, of Wollaston Hall, and sister of Fanny, Lady Lyveden (mother of the present Lord Lyveden).
