Mr Uriah Upton
The Funeral of the late Mr Uriah Upton, who passed away last Friday at Northampton Hospital aged 66 years, took place on Monday at the cemetery. The first portion of the burial service was conducted in St Mary’s Church by the Rev W Peppercorn (Curate) who also officiated at the graveside. The coffin, which was of polished elm with brass fittings, bore the inscription:

Uriah Upton
Died Feb. 9th, 1917
Aged 66 years.

The mourners comprised: Mr and Mrs S Upton (brother and sister-in-law), Mr and Mrs Aaron Upton, of Rushden (brother and sister-in-law), Mr and Mrs E Mason, of Wymington (nephew and niece), Mrs T Rippin, of Sheffield (niece), Mrs S Martin, of Rushden (niece), Seaman S Upton (nephew), Mrs A Pack (niece), Mrs E Wright, of Wymington (niece), the Misses Violet, Lily, Doris and Linda Upton and Phyllis Mason, of Wymington (nieces). Mrs Church, of Wymington (sister), and Mr George Upton (brother) were unable to attend the funeral through illness. Some beautiful floral tributes to the memory of the deceased were placed on the grave, as follow: With deep sympathy, from Solomon and Alice, and nieces and nephews (Higham); Sister Annie and George, and nieces and nephews (Wymington); Mr and Mrs Aaron Upton and nieces and nephews (Rushden); great-niece Winnie Church (Kettering) and Phyllis Mason (Wymington, and three nephews at Wymington; a lovely cross from Messrs J Seckington and Son, Rushden, “in memory of an old servant”; and a bunch of flowers in remembrance of his late sister Patience; “Gone but not forgotten”. Mr E Parker was the undertaker. The late Mr Upton had suffered from a cancer on the tongue for some considerable time, but he was admitted to the County hospital on January 6th, and an operation was successfully performed on the Monday prior to his death. Pneumonia, bronchitis, and pleurisy, however, followed, and resulted in his death on Friday last.
