A Wonderful Example
Official information has been received by Mrs. Stevenson, 19 Thrift Street, Wollaston, stating that her husband, Company Sergeant Major J. Stevenson, of the Northants Regiment, was killed in action on March 25th in France, by a bullet through the head. His officer writes that he could appreciate the good work done by him as Company Sergeant Major. He set a wonderful example of fearlessness and coolness under fire on several occasions in the recent fighting.
“It was in the afternoon of March 25th, as we were getting the company in certain positions that your husband met his death by a rifle bullet in the head, being killed instantaneously.”
Prior to the outbreak of war Sergeant Major Stevenson had done 21 years’ service, 15 of which were in India with the 1st Northants. He went through the North-West Indian Frontier Campaign for which he received the medal and three clasps. He was also in possession of the medal for long service and good conduct. He carried the colours of the Northants regiment when in line prior to the outbreak of war. He leaves a wife and one child, and sad to relate, Mrs. Stevenson lost her brother, Corporal E. Green, in the early part of the year.
