Rushden Echo, 21st September 1917

Killed—Arthur William Smith who previous to enlistment worked for Mr. Hector, currier, Higham Ferrers, and who was the elder son of Mr. and Mrs. W. Smith, of Three Shire Hall Farm Covington, was killed in action in France on August 16th. Pte. G. Hipwell writes: “In the last action we were in Arthur had a slight wound, and whilst trying to get out was shot by a sniper and killed instantly. Before the day was gone he was buried with several more behind the lines, and a cross was put up. It seems a shame for one to go under when he had been through all the hardships that he had, and also when he had been out here such a long time.” Deceased, who was 23 years of age, enlisted at the beginning of the war in the Northamptons. He went to France in April 1915, and had been twice previously wounded.
