Miss M. Simpson of Chelveston

A WELL-KNOWN figure in sporting and agricultural circles, Miss Mary Helen Simpson, M.B.E., of Chelveston, died on Friday.

For many years she had been held in high esteem for her work with women's organisations and the Chelveston Church.

Miss Simpson was the eldest of three daughters of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Hirst Simpson, of Chelveston, and she leaves her youngest sister, Miss Jenny Simpson, of Chelveston, and a brother, Mr. William Hirst Simpson, of Wellingborough.

Work For W.I.

For 25 years she was the chief, general and agricultural organiser for the Women's Institute, and maintained interest in the organisation during recent years. On her retirement from full time service, she was presented with a car by the National Federation of Women's Institutes.

During the final years of the Great War, from the time of the forming of the Women's Land Army, she held the position of Regional Organiser, and it was for her work in this sphere that she was later awarded the M.B.E. For many years a church warden at Chelveston Parish Church, she had also carried out a great deal of Diocesan work.

Always a leading figure of the sporting fields in her younger days, Miss Simpson was an expert hockey player and horsewoman.
