Pte Reg Sawford
Reported Missing Since July 14th News Wanted
Mr and Mrs W Sawford, 32, Corporation-terrace, Higham Ferrers, received news recently that their son, Pte Reg Sawford, 17726 Northants Regt., has been missing since July 14th, and they are anxious for news of him. The news was contained in a letter which they received from a Second-Lieutenant in their son’s regiment as follows:
“It is with deep regret that I write this letter to inform you that your son has been missing since July 14th, and I fear he is dead. There is a possible chance of his being wounded and taken to hospital; if so, you would have heard by now.
“I knew your son as a good soldier and one who always did his duty. The whole company join with me in offering you deepest sympathy. May God comfort you in your trouble.”
Mr and Mrs Sawford have received no further news as yet, and are hopeful for their son’s safety, being inclined to think that he may have been made a prisoner by the Germans. They would be glad if any of his comrades could send further news of him.
Pte Sawford has been in France ten months and enlisted in Easter 1915. He formerly worked at Messrs Roberts and Randall’s currying factory, Higham Ferrers.
