Raunds Shoehand’s Suicide - Body found in Nene at Little Addington
Irthlingborough Man’s Discovery
Walter Burgess, an Irthlingborough leather dresser, while walking the river bank at Little Addington on Wednesday, saw a body in the water, and reported it to P.C. Earle (Stanwick). Together they removed the body, which had evidently been in the water some time, the features being quite unrecognisable.
At the inquest held yesterday at the Bell Hotel, Little Addington, Thomas Everitt Tansley, of 35 Park-road, Raunds, a gardener, identified the body as that of his stepbrother, John Thomas Saunders, shoehand, aged 43, of 2 Park-road, Raunds. Deceased had suffered from neuritis and had worried about his work, but witness knew no reason why he should take his life.
P.C. Earle said the widow had told him that her husband left home in the best of spirits. He was last seen alive on July 6th in High-street, Raunds.
The Coroner recorded a verdict of “Suicide by drowning” stating that there was no evidence as to the state of mind of the deceased at the time he took his life.
