St Mary’s Church, Higham Ferrers, Parish Magazine, September 1957, transcribed by Kay Collins
Jean Powell

After many years of illness patiently and valiantly borne, Jean Powell was called to eternal life on July 25th—the Feast of S. James.

Her years of sickness were not wasted years, she used them to the best of her ability—not least in the practice of her religion. She received the Sacrament of Confirmation at the hands of Bishop Vernon privately in 1954—and since then continued as a faithful communicant, receiving the Blessed Sacrament quietly and devotedly by means of Reserved Sacrament brought to her each week—except when the nature of her illness made it impossible. She was anointed shortly before her death, and made what was to be her last earthly Communion only two days before her call.

Jean was a brave soul—and no matter how ill she felt, almost always managed to squeeze a smile somehow. She will be greatly missed by her husband, and family. We extend our deep sympathy to Mr. Powell and Jeanette, and to Mr. and Mrs. Goodwin. One who has for four years visited her at least twice weekly will also miss her, too.
