Funeral of Private Charles E Pattison
Former Church Lads' Brigade Member
The funeral of the late Pte Charles Edward Pattison, of the Beds. Regiment, whose death was reported in our last issue, took place on Saturday at the cemetery at Higham Ferrers. The Rev P J Richards, Vicar of St. Peter’s, Rushden, officiated in the unavoidable absence of the Rev H K Fry. The first portion of the obsequies was conducted in St Mary’s Church, whither the cortege first proceeded. Subsequently the coffin was conveyed from the church to the cemetery on a wheel litter by six members of the St Mary’s C.L.B., of which the deceased was formerly a member. The coffin, which had brass fittings, bore the inscription:-
Charles Edward Pattison
Died August 28th, 1917
Aged 20 years.
The mourners comprised: Mr and Mrs C Pattison (father and mother), Misses Sarah and Lizzie Pattison (sisters), Pte Joseph Pattison, of the Training Reserve (brother), Master R Pattison (brother), Mrs T Pearcey, Mrs Dawes, Mrs Caterell, Miss Dawes, Miss Parker, Mr and Mrs Litchfield, Mr Boxall, Mr Harry Turner and Mr J Turner (friends). A contingent of wounded soldiers from the Auxiliary Hospital also followed.
After the committal the Last Post was sounded by buglers of the C.L.B.
Wreaths were placed on the grave as follow: From the Family; Officers, non-commissioned officers, and cadets of St Mary's C.L.B.; Mr and Mrs T Pearcey, Mr and Mrs Litchfield, Mr and Mrs Keys, Mr and Mrs Espin, and the neighbours.
Mr and Mrs Pattison desire to return their sincere thanks to the many kind friends for sympathy shown to them in their heavy loss.
