Local Wesleyan Methodism was strongly represented at the funeral on Monday afternoon of one of its Higham Ferrers stalwarts Mr John Parker, who died the previous Thursday at the age of 86.
The funeral service in the Wesleyan Church was conducted by the Rev G C Gould, who in the course of an appropriate address, recalled Mr Parkers devotion to the Wesleyan cause during his many years of local preaching and other church work. Mrs C E Groome at the organ, played suitable music during the Church service, and the internment followed at the cemetery.
The family mourners attending were; Mr and Mrs John Parker (son and daughter-in-law), Mrs J Coles (daughter), Mr and Mrs H Parker (son and daughter-in-law), Mr and Mrs A Smith (son-in-law and daughter), Mr and Mrs F. Parker (son and daughter-in-law), Miss F Parker (daughter), Mrs G Parker (daughter-in-law), Mr George Parker and Mr Will Parker, Kettering (nephew), Mrs Allen (granddaughter), Mr J H Parker (grandson), Mr J Rollings (nephew) and Mrs Baxter (niece).
The representatives of the Higham Ferrers Circuit local preachers were Alderman T Patenall, Mr W P Orrell, Mr C. Larkinson, Mr J. Hartwell and Mr Thomas Freeman, and the Higham Wesleyan Church's representative was Mr H. R. Patenall. There were present a number of members of village churches, particularly Addington from which the official representative was Mrs Brown. Four bedesmen - Messrs. Alfred Middleton, C Pack, Mitchell and Coleman - paid a last tribute to the eldest of their company.
The wreaths sent bore the following inscriptions; " In loving memory of dear Father from sons and daughters"; "With deepest sympathy from 'Helmsdown' Stanwick"; "With deepest sympathy from Mr and Mrs H Timpson, 70 Moor Road, Rushden; "With deepest sympathy from Mr and Mrs T Patenall"; "From Diana"; "In loving memory from Mrs and Miss Driver, 222 Wellingborough Road, Rushden"; "In loving memory of dear Grandpa from Susan and family"; "In loving memory of Grandfather Parker, from 82 High St, Higham Ferrers and 'Neneshurst', Park St, Irthlingborough"; "In loving memory, from Bob and Lucy and family, Northampton and Birmingham"; "Kind remembrance dear Grandpa, Florrie and Arthur."
The family of the late Mr Parker would take this opportunity of thanking friends who have shown sympathy with them and have sentfloral tributes; and they remember with gratitude the services of Dr D Crew and Nurse Osgood.
