Mr Len Lewis, aged 22, son of Mr and Mrs Wilhelm Lewis, formerly of New Estate, Wymington, was killed at Blackbutt, Queensland, Australia, a tree falling on him whilst engaged on scrub falling for Anderson’s Blackbutt Timber Co.
The accident was caused by the strong wind blowing back a pine tree, which had previously been scarfed, on to the unfortunate man, before he could escape. His mate immediately secured assistance, and the injured man was taken to town in Mr Brett’s car. He survived for a couple of hours, but died before the arrival of Dr Taylor, from Nanango. He leaves a young widow (and Australian), and the fatality is the more distressing as it is only a few months ago that Mr and Mrs Lewis lost their infant child.
The deceased was a grandson of Mrs S Tassell, of 19, Wentworth-road, Rushden, and nephew of Mr W J Tassell, of 16, Brookfield-road, Rushden. Deceased formerly worked art Messrs Lawrence’s factory at Rushden. Pte Arthur Lyon, brother of the deceased’s widow, is now in Chatham Hospital, wounded.
