Turning a somersault with his bicycle (in swerving past a boy) and being jammed between the handlebars and the crossbar, a Raunds shoe operative was so badly hurt that he died in hospital four days later.
At the inquest at Northampton General Hospital on Wednesday it was stated that deceased, Mr Archibald Ralph Lack, aged 23, of 21 Grove-street, Raunds, died of a ruptured spleen and internal bleeding.
Evidence showed that Mr Lack was cycling between Raunds and Ringstead yesterday week. In swerving round two boys on the road, he touched one them and rode on for five yards, when his bicycle turned right over on its front wheel, Mr Lack going over with it and being caught awkwardly beneath. It was surmised that he must have jammed his front brake on suddenly, thinking that he might have hurt the boy. At first it was thought that his injury was not very serious, and he was taken home, but on Saturday he was removed to Northampton Hospital, where he died on Monday night.
A verdict of “Accidental Death” was recorded, the jury attaching no blame to anyone. Mr A J Darnell was the Coroner.
