Oldest Inhabitant Dead—On Tuesday there passed away the oldest inhabitant of the village in the person of Mr Thomas Labbutt, in his 87th year. Deceased, who was well known, carried on the business of a timber dealer and carter, and for close on fifty years had carted the coals to the Castle.

He was a Conservative and Churchman, holding the office of vicar’s warden at the time of his death. He was also parish constable for a number of years, and school manager. He leaves four daughters, a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren to mourn their loss.
