Mrs Griggs

Mrs. Griggs attained her 92nd birthday on Friday, December 18th last. She was the oldest inhabitant in Wollaston, and was born on December 18th, 1822. She was the widow of the late Mr. Henry Griggs, who died in 1900. Mrs. Griggs' health was good at the time of her last birthday, and she could see to read and thread a needle without the aid of glasses. She went out every day, weather permitting, and a day or two previous to her birthday walked home from Irchester—2½ miles. She was the oldest member at the Baptist Chapel, being a regular attendant at the morning service devoting the afternoon to visiting the sick, whilst when the weather permitted she also went to the evening service. She was a laundress for over 50 years. There are three sons—Mr. G. Griggs, baker, Kettering; Mr. Benjamin Griggs, shoe manufacturer; and Mr. Wm. Griggs, bricklayer, Wellingborough. She leaves 22 grandchildren, one of whom is a soldier at the front, one who has been in the Navy twelve years, and now attached to the Flying Squadron, and two in Kitchener's Army. There are 25 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Griggs was sister to the late Mr. Charles Leech, who left a handsome bequest to the Northampton Hospital. Her mother's maiden name was Cooper, sister to the founder of the well-known firm of Cooper and Cooper, of Old Kent-road, London, and William Cooper, contractor, Brixton. She was a native of Wollaston, and had lived here all her life.
