Mr. Richard John Downing

Mr. Richard John Downing, well-known resident of Higham Ferrers, where he was postmaster for 28 years, died at his home, 40, Wharf-road, in the early hours of Monday morning. Mr. Downing was 81 years of age, and his death followed three weeks’ illness. Coming to Higham Ferrers from his home town of Pinner, Middlesex, in 1904, Mr. Downing became postmaster at the old Wood-street post office, retiring six years ago.

A widow, Mrs. Kate Sarah Downing, is bereaved. There is no family.

The funeral took place at Higham Ferrers on Wednesday, the service being conducted at 40, Wharf-road, by the Rev. P. Kirk (Vicar). The mourners were: Mrs. R. J. Downing (widow), Mr. W. Downing, Chingford (nephew), Mrs. Ing, South Tottenham (niece), Miss Amy Ing (niece), Mr. A. Downing, Watford (nephew), Mr. P. T. Downing, Harrow Weald (nephew),Mrs. H. M. Penn, London (niece), Miss M. Downing and Miss A. Downing, Burton Lodge (cousins), Mrs. Essam and Mrs. Frank Webb.

Postmen present were Messrs. J. Neal, F. Dickenson and F. Tye, the latter two acting as bearers.
