An old and respected Higham Ferrers resident, Mrs. Veni Cox, aged 79 years, of the Chequers Inn, died on Tuesday last from acute bronchitis, after about ten days of serious illness. Mrs. Cox was a native of Gilmorton, Leicestershire, and she was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Matthews. She married Mr. Charles Cox and came to the Chequers Inn 44 years ago. When Mr. Cox died, in 1883, she took over the licence, and at the time of her death was one of the oldest licence holders in the district. She had no children, but her niece, Miss Nellie Matthews, had been living with her for many years. Dr. Greenfield attended. The deceased’s sister, Mrs. Mawby, aged 68, is still living and is a resident of Higham Ferrers.
