Pte. Horace Arthur Clayton

The Rushden Echo, 21st December 1917, transcribed by Kay Collins

Soldier’s Death — Pte. H A Clayton Previously Reported Missing
In January this year we reported that Pte. Horace Arthur Clayton, of the Border Regt., son of Mrs Fred Clayton, of 24 Commercial-street, Higham Ferrers, was missing from his unit. We regret to report that his mother has received an official communication that his death must now be assumed, as no further news has been received concerning him.

The late Pte. Clayton would have been 20 years of age this month if he had lived. He was his mother’s only son, and much sympathy is felt with her in her bereavement.

Pte. Clayton, who enlisted on October 24th 1915, had only been in France a fortnight when he was reported missing. He was formerly employed by Messrs. West Bros., Higham Ferrers, and as a lad passed through the Higham Wesleyan Sunday School, being also a member of the Boys’ Brigade.
