Rushden Echo, 18th January 1918, transcribed by Kay Collins

Fatality—Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Clark, of Francis Terrace, Raunds, have received a letter notifying the death of their eldest son, Private John William Clark, T.M.B., aged 25, as follows: “It is with deep regret I have to inform you of the accidental death of your son, Pte. William Clark. On Dec. 31st some ammunition was accidentally exploded, killing your son and his team instantly. They were all buried today in the British Military Cemetery, Haringhe, with full military honours. He is a great loss to the battery, as he was one of my best men—always cheerful, devoted to duty, and respected by everyone. We all wish to express our sympathy in your loss—Your truly, Percy J. Payton, Lieut, O.C. T. M. Battery.” The deceased worked for E. W. Stanley, Ltd., boot manufacturers, before joining the Colours.
