Robert Beckett

Wellingborough News, 26 Nov 1881

WYMINGTON - Another fatal accident has occurred at the railway works now in progress at Wymington, near Bedford, of the Midland Company, and was the subject of an inquest on Saturday by Dr. Prior, borough coroner.

The deceased was named Robert Beckett, and had only been employed there for five days when he met with the accident. He was engaged with others in loading trucks with ballast,   and stood on some slippery rocks. Just as several waggons were entering the cutting the man slipped, and three trucks went over both his legs. It being in a very remote parish, it was nearly five hours before a trap could be obtained to take the sufferer to the Bedford Infirmary. Here he only lingered a few hours, and died   from the shock to the system. The jury returned a verdict of "Accidentally killed." No relative or friend of the deceased can be found, and his name was only discovered by applying to the timekeeper on the works. He appears to be about 60 years of age.
