Killed by a Shell – Only Two Men Left out of Six
We regret to report that Mrs. Walter Ball has received unofficial news that her husband, Lance Corporal Walter Ball, of the King’s Royal Rifles, was killed in action in France on May 20th.

The sad news is sent to a comrade, Pte. Abbott, son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Abbott, of Higham Ferrers. Pte. Abbott writes that they were just coming out of the trenches for a well earned rest when a shell burst close to them, and out of six men, only two were left.

The late Lance-Cpl. Ball was 31 years of age, and leaves a widow and two children to mourn their loss. He enlisted on January 15th this year, and went to France a fortnight before Easter. Prior to enlistment he was in the employ of Messrs. Luck and Andrews, Higham Ferrers.
