OBITUARY—A gloom has been cast over this village in consequence of the sudden deaths of Mr. and Mrs. S. J. Abington. On Friday evening, July 25, she seemed much better than usual and was about the village fulfilling her mission of sympathy to the poor and suffering, but on Saturday morning she was taken ill and on Monday morning she departed this life. The bereavement was very keenly felt by her husband, who was taken very ill on Monday evening, and after four days suffering was called away. The former was buried on Thursday, July 31st, amidst a large crowd of sorrowing mourners and spectators. Many felt that they had lost a true friend, who made the hearts of the widows and fatherless to sing for joy.
Mr. Abington was buried on Tuesday, when a good number attended the funeral, thus expressing their sorrow that one so highly respected, and in many ways so useful should have been taken away from them. Both were earnest temperance people and practical supporters of the Baptist Missionary Society. Mrs. Abington had been a member of the Baptist Church in the village for 44 years and Mr. Abington for 16 years. The funeral services were conducted by the Rev. R. A. Selby, pastor of the above church, who the day preceding the first funeral buried Mr. T. Phillips, sen., and on Thursday, Mrs. S. Wilson, both members of the church. Thus the Baptist Church in eight days has been bereaved of four of its devoted members.
